First Steps into the Real World: Part 1

First Steps into the Real World: Part 1

There are those who know what they want to do and there are those who do not. I was one of the lucky ones. I knew…

Many people contemplate for months, years even, what their first “real” job out of college will be like. These thoughts can be overpowering. It’s a dramatic change from having a somewhat care-free life, to waking up and realizing you will be working for the rest of your life, (well at least for most of us).  It’s crossing over a wobbly bridge that you are unsure about.

I recently graduated from Saint Joseph’s University, and have joined the team at customedialabs. My coming-out-of-college experience has been quite different. Yes, I had, and still have overwhelming thoughts about the “real world,” but let me tell you this; I was ready to dive right into the deep end. The thought of growing up and having responsibility appealed to me.

I am a firm believer in loving what you do. That way you can be at your prime and produce outstanding work. This industry is cut throat. I can tell that from only 2 weeks of being immersed in the business. If you don’t love it, get out, because those who do will come right along and knock you out of your spot.

My passion for advertising came in waves. It began, just like a lot of people I am sure, sitting in front of the TV laughing and criticizing commercials. It developed even more in college, from taking classes in design, marketing and advertising. What stood out to me the most was the power advertising has to communicate to consumers. I knew from then on that I wanted to be behind the scenes of what creates such thought provoking communication. I became obsessed with shows such as Mad Men, and a recent show, The Pitch. I enjoy watching commercials and reading through magazines just to see print ads. It’s my passion that will be a powerful tool for me to make it in this advertising world.
